DAVE VAN RONK
June 30, 1936 - February 10, 2002

We are deeply saddened to report that Dave Van Ronk died on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002. Dave's impact on music is inestimable. He came to renown in the folk music revival of the late 1950s, for his warm and gritty baritone voice and his powerful guitar playing, coupled to great effect in his interpretations of blues, ragtime, gospel, jug band and folk songs. He was also a mentor, teacher and friend to many up-and-coming musicians in the generation following his, such as Bob Dylan, Steve Katz, Danny Kalb, Joni Mitchell, and a host of others.
Dave performed at the Towne Crier Cafe many many times since its early days, and we have counted him as a dear friend as well as an important and still-vital artist. He will be greatly missed.
Dave was diagnosed with cancer last autumn, and his passing, only a week after the Towne Crier benefit concert for him, was unexpected a few days after the event.
Performers in attendance showing their support were Christine Lavin, Oscar Brand, Steve Katz, Danny Kalb, Pete Seeger with grandson Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, Jay Ungar & Molly Mason and Garth Hudson. We are grateful to his many friends and fans who turned out to give their support. Letters of condolence may be sent to, Andrea Von Ronk 15 Sheridan Sq., NewYork, N.Y. 10014.

Here are some of the photographs taken at the Towne Crier benefit for Dave Van Ronk on Feb. 3 when his prognosis for recovery was considered good. There was a warm and optimistic feeling throughout the crowd, since we had heard that day that Dave was released from the hospital and was up and around, and feeling well. Sadly, a few days later he took a turn for the worse, and went back to the hospital where he passed away. The good cheer evident among the listeners and musical guests is a reflection of the love and appreciation we all share for Dave.
