DANNY KALB of the Blues Project
also special guest
HOPE MACHINE featuring Steve Kirkman
and Fred Gillen Jr.
Danny Kalb is celebrating
the release of his new CD, Live In Brooklyn, containing
Blues Project favorites and liner notes by sean Willentz. Danny
has long been recognized as one of America's foremost guitarists.
He is best known as the founding member of the legendary Blues
Project, which along with other famous member, Al Kooper, became
on of the best-loved bands of the mid-60s, developing a strong
national following and influencing untold numbers of aspiring
young blues guitar players. Born into a musical family, Danny
was raised in Mount Vernon, NY. He spent his childhood surrounded
by his parent's folk, blues, jazz and classical records. He picked
up the guitar at age 13 and he hasn't put it down since. He attended
the University of Wisconsin but couldn't resist the pull of Greenwich
Village, which was in the midst of a musical explosion, with
musicians like Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Richie, Eric Andersen
and Odetta. A protégé of the great Dave Van Ronk,
Danny established himself on the seminal folk and blues scene
in the 60's where he was first known as a solo performer and
session player with Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger and others. In addition
to playing all dimensions of the blues guitar, both electric
and traditional, he explored other genres of guitar composition
- modern atonal and open tunings. Danny is also a teacher and
has taught seminars and clinics. The musical world is ready to
listen to Danny Kalb again. Not a footnote to musical history
or a nostalgia act, Danny is a special artist in his own right
- truly creative and ever-growing.
By revisiting
the lives and songs of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, Hope Machine
humbly embraces the influence these troubadours have had on their
own lives and songs. Woody and Pete were the keepers of a rich
tradition of singing songs which inspired hope in the face of
despair. The songs they wrote and sung told the stories of the
triumphs and tragedies of common folks striving to stand tall
and live with dignity. Hope Machine respectfully draws from
this tradition for their own songs, and sings the songs of the
elders with no pretense or affectation, but with sincere passion
and the humility of gratitude. This is a very special stripped-down
duo performance for the band, which will consist of Steve Kirkman
and Fred Gillen Jr.
